If you are sitting at home reading this article, chances are you’re just like me – you love the game of poker. Whether you’re in it for the thrill of the game or you’re trying to make a living, playing online offers several distinct advantages over the “live” game. The online game is a faster game, which essentially means more and potentially larger pots and more risks per hour than a standard B&M (brick and mortar) game. When you see a larger volume of hands, chances are that during each session you play, you are bound to see something that leaves you speechless, shaking your head, mystified, or (shudder at the thought) having to re-buy. In this column, each week we will take a look at a different hand that fits the previously mentioned criteria. My involvement in the hand notwithstanding, I will try to remain as impartial as possible, and for the hands that I didn’t win, I will keep my bitterness to a minimum. (At least, this is my intent)
Sometimes, poker isn’t all that exciting. In fact, at times, it can be downright boring at certain times especially when you aren’t getting many playable hands. But sometimes, when you’re not involved, you still get to see some incredible situations occur. From these, you can learn about what can happen or just sit there and be mystified. Either way, you should enjoy the experience.
On that note, let me tell you about a pretty unbelievable hand I recently saw. In fact, had I not been there, I probably wouldn’t believe it. It occurred at my local $1-$2 no limit game. We were 8 handed at the time. Charles, an aggressive and tricky player raised from Under the Gun to $20. It was folded to middle position to Alex, a solid yet somewhat tight player who instantly raised to $50. I folded as did another player. Chris, on the button pondered the action for about a minute before he too called. The blinds folded and Charles closed the action by calling as well. There was $153 in the pot and 3 players.
The flop came down Ks-10s-4d. Charles bet out $50 and Alex thought and thought. Finally after 2 full minutes, he decides to call. With $125 sitting in front of him, Chris moved all-in instantly. This action seemed to frustrate Charles and he went into the tank. Finally, he pushed in his last $200 as well. At this point, Alex looked completely shell-shocked. Mind you that he had just busted out and re-bought for $300. Calling Charles’ re-raise would put him all-in and cause him to risk all his chips for the second consecutive hand. After some deliberation, he announces, “I really don’t think either of you has a king” and he calls. There is $528 in the main pot and $150 in a side pot for Charles and Alex.
They all turn their cards over and here’s what they had:
• Charles – As-Js for a royal flush draw, no hand at the moment
• Alex – Qs- Qd – So much for Charles’ Royal Flush
• Chris – 10c-10d for a set of 10’s and the lead for the main pot.
All three players stand up and the rest of us watch intently as the turn comes. Incredibly, the turn is the Qc. Alex shouts “yes!” when he hits his set until he realizes that this card has given Charles a two-outer for his Broadway straight. Chris curses as he has now been reduced to a one outer.
Then the river comes and would you believe it, it was the 10h, giving Alec his full house and Chris Quad 10’s!! Unbelievable, Charles was mortified as was Alec when he realized his second-best hand was only good for the $150 side pot.
What an incredible hand. It was the buzz of the room for the next hour. That’s the beautiful thing about this game, you just never know what you’ll see. _________________ My favourite pokerrooms:
