Looks like I was doing my best to give a few of the division leading teams the ‘kiss of death” heading into the all star break. As soon as I proclaimed that Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis and San Diego were locks for playoff appearances, a few spit the bit this past weekend.
The White Sox got swept in their own yard by the Oakland A’s and their top pitchers Garland, Buehrle and Garcia were tagged with losses. Speaking of bad pitching the Angels got swept by the lowly Mariners at home and their chuckers allowed an embarrassing 33 runs in four games.
San Diego played .500 ball the past 10 games leading up to the break, but are sitting pretty as the Diamondbacks, Dodgers and Giants are not very good.
Michelle Wie barely missed the cut at the John Deere Classic on the weekend and the future looks rosy for the 15-year old.
There is, of course, still room for improvement. She's going to have to get stronger if she wants to compete with the men on a regular basis, and her trainer has her lifting free weights and doing exercises to improve her balance.
She also needs to improve her focus. At 4 under through 14 holes Friday, she lost control stunningly quick, three-putting for a double-bogey on No. 6 and shanking her tee shot on No. 7.
``I just really realized how important the last six holes are. I just have to think about that from now on,'' she said. ``Even though I played the front nine, I just have to start all over and play great the back nine, too. And that's not what I did.''
But she's only 15. Tiger Woods didn't even play his first PGA Tour event until he was 16, missing the cut in the 1992 Nissan Open at Riviera with rounds of 72-75. It took him eight tries to make a cut, and he was 19 when he tied for 41st at the Masters.
Lance Armstrong removed some pressure from his teammates on the weekend by purposely relinquishing the yellow jersey to Jen Voight, before the Tour de France hits the punishing Alps on Tuesday. Armstrong does not want his mates to peak to soon and they will spend the next week, positioning themselves for the final stages.
Dale Earnhart Jr. pulled off a huge win in Chicago on the weekend and suddenly his DEI team is brimming with confidence. he question now is whether Earnhardt and the rest of his team can take the momentum they have built recently and sustain it over the next eight races to do what seemed impossible even two weeks ago: make the Chase for the Nextel Cup.
There's no question Earnhardt has taken two big steps in that direction with his finishes at Daytona and Chicagoland. He was 18th in the standings and 216 points out of the top 10 after Sonoma. He's now 13th and just 115 points out of qualifying for the Chase after Sunday's win.
Still 491 points out of first, Earnhardt can forget about overtaking point’s leader Jimmie Johnson in the remaining eight races leading up to the Chase. But those 115 points can easily be made up. After all, Earnhardt made up 101 points in just the last two races. |
