The San Diego Padres are in a tailspin that is reaching epic proportions and in the process turning the National League West Division into an embarrassment for major league baseball.

The Diamondbacks have accomplished something that no other West Division team can lay claim to and that is a winning record the past 10 games. The joke here is that even with a 1-9 mark the past 10 games, the Padres are basically dead even with the boys in the desert. The Giants were supposed to unload Jason Schmidt at the deadline, but they realized that they have as legitimate shot as anyone to win the West.

We will leave the pathetic 37-67 Rockies out of the equation, but there is even hope for those who bleed Dodger Blue, as they remain just four back. The Padres were outscored 24-4 in their 3-game series against a usually inept Reds squad and if you throw in the last loss to the Cardinals prior to the weekend series, the numbers are a dismal 35-5!

If you are one of those sentimental fans that breathe “Dodger Blue” you are suddenly just four games back and you do have Jeff Kent, who has made a habit of showing up in the post season.

Over in the American League the Twins are reeling and they now must host the red hot Athletics for 4 straight games. Forget the wild card. The way the Oakland Athletics are playing, they just might steamroll to the top of the AL West.
Oakland, which will enter August with a 1 1/2 -game lead over the New York Yankees for the AL wild card, has crawled within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Los Angeles Angels in the West by winning 31 of its last 38 games.
The A's completed a three-game sweep of Detroit with Sunday's 5-2 win, their 11th victory in 12 games and 20th win in July -- matching the 1974 team for the most victories in the month in Oakland history.
Jay Payton hit his fifth homer since joining the A's from Boston at the All-Star break as Oakland took full advantage of the Angels dropping two of three to the Yankees over the weekend.
The Twins, winners of three straight AL Central titles, are 3 1/2 games behind Oakland for the wild card entering this series. Minnesota, which is 14 and a half games back of the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox, suffered a three-game sweep in Boston over the weekend and has dropped four straight overall.
The Twins stranded eight runners in scoring position, including four at third base - three times leaving the bases loaded.
The No. 3 spot in the batting order went hitless for the fifth time in six games; the Twins managed exactly seven hits for the fourth consecutive game; and their batting average since the all-star break dropped to .232 - worst in the American League.
"Frustrating,'' said Twins starter Brad Radke (6-11), who was tagged with the loss again, his seventh in eight decisions, despite pitching seven strong innings.
In golf action Vijay Singh once again showed his ability to earn cash and win tournaments, just not major titles. He pushed his bankroll for the 2005 season to just a few bucks shy of $6 million. A very relaxed looking Tiger Woods was second!
