If San Diego is going to right the ship they had better start in Pittsburgh against a mediocre Pirates team and then against the Nationals in Washington. They have lost 12 of 13 and 18-35 record since June 1st is downright embarrassing. Manager Bruce Bochy’s reign as manager of this club, will be in jeopardy if things do not improve!
Atlanta: RHP Jay Powell had surgery Monday to repair his broken right arm. Powell was injured throwing a pitch in Friday’s game. Manager Bobby Cox said he planned to talk with Powell today. "The hard thing with that is trying to find something to say," Cox said. ... After RHP John Thomson makes a minor league rehab appearance Wednesday with Class AAA Richmond, LHP Mike Hampton will take his turn Thursday. Thomson is rehabbing from a finger injury, and Hampton was placed on the DL on July 18 with a strained lower back.
Arizona: LF Luis Gonzalez went 2-for-3 Sunday with an RBI double and a solo home run, raising his career batting average against Cubs RHP Greg Maddux to .316 in 98 at-bats with 10 homers. Said Gonzalez, "I don't even try to figure it out with him. For some reason, there are just guys you see the ball good off of, and I just felt good."
Chicago: Jerry Hairston Jr. figures to lose his job as leadoff batter with the trade bringing in RF Matt Lawton. Hairston, who fought for playing time at second base before settling into center field after Corey Patterson was demoted to the minor leagues, said he just wants to play consistently and doesn't care where he bats. Look for him to hit seventh or eighth. ... RHP Greg Maddux, who has one victory in his last seven starts, needs seven victories to win 15 or more for an 18th consecutive season. Maddux might have just 10 or 11 more starts left to do it.
Cincinnati: IF Rich Aurilia is at odds with manager Jerry Narron and was disappointed he wasn't traded before Sunday's deadline. "I was told a week ago I was the second baseman for the rest of the year," Aurilia said. "Then I was told Friday I wasn't, but I wasn't given any reason. Will I be happy here not playing? Probably not." ... RF Austin Kearns sat out Sunday with a tight right hamstring suffered Saturday while running out a triple. He is expected back in the lineup tonight.
Colorado: After allowing 13 homers in 101 2/3 innings in his first 17 starts, RHP Jamey Wright, who will start tonight at San Francisco, has yielded six homers in 16 innings in his last three starts. ... The Rockies have hit 94 homers in 104 games, putting them on pace to finish the season with 146 homers. That would be their lowest total for any season not interrupted by labor trouble except the 1993 expansion season, when they hit 142.
Florida: LHP Ron Villone, acquired by Florida from Seattle on the trade deadline, had one strikeout in 1 1/3 hitless innings Monday. ... 1B Carlos Delgado missed a start for the fifth time because of a sore left elbow. ... SS Alex Gonzalez, who returned Sunday for the first time since July 22, was again in the lineup. ... 3B Mike Lowell's homer in the second Monday was his first in five games.
Houston: RHP Roger Clemens, who suffered back spasms last Wednesday in his victory against Philadelphia, remains on schedule to start tonight against Arizona in the first game of a three-game series. ... RHP Roy Oswalt will appreciate the extra day manager Phil Garner plans to give his starting rotation, taking advantage of the day off the team had Monday. Oswalt, who was trying for his 10th victory in 11 starts, admitted his arm was tired in his no-decision Sunday against the Mets.
Los Angeles: LH reliever Wilson Alvarez might be considering retirement after giving up the game-winning two-run home run to St. Louis' Jim Edmonds in the 11th inning Sunday. Alvarez, 35, has been on the disabled list twice this season with shoulder problems and has been ineffective (1-4, 5.73 ERA) while trying to pitch with a frayed labrum that might require surgery. Alvarez said he would think about retirement rather than going through surgery.
New York: OF Cliff Floyd has 24 home runs, his most in three seasons with the Mets. His career best is 31 in 2001, while playing for the Marlins.
Milwaukee: The Brewers exercised the club option for manager Ned Yost for 2006. The Brewers are 52-54 this season, Yost's third as manager. He has a 187-242 record with Milwaukee, which hasn't had a winning season since 1992. ... RF Geoff Jenkins was hit by a pitch for the 14th time Sunday. Among NL hitters, only Florida's Carlos Delgado (15) has been hit more.
Philadelphia: 1B Jim Thome faced pitching for the first time in a month at the Phillies' minor league complex in Clearwater, Fla. Thome has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 1 with tendinitis in his right elbow. Thome also spent time on the DL in May for back problems. Thome, who sprayed hits to all fields and took grounders, does not know when he will start a rehab assignment. He is hitting .207 with seven homers and 30 RBI in 59 games this season. ... LH closer Billy Wagner survived the trade deadline. He has been hoping that the front office will initiate contract talks before he becomes a free agent this fall.
Pittsburgh: Newly acquired OF Jody Gerut was originally listed as the starting right fielder and No. 5 hitter in the lineup, but Rob Mackowiak replaced Gerut when he arrived at the park only an hour before the game. Manager Lloyd McClendon said he plans to start Gerut in right field against right-handed pitchers. ... RHP Jose Mesa recorded his 318th career save, moving into a tie for 12th all-time with Rick Aguilera.
St. Louis: 1B Albert Pujols is 13-for-29 (.448) with three homers during a seven-game hitting streak. ... CF Jim Edmonds, who had homered in the previous two games, doubled twice Monday. ... 3B Abraham Nunez robbed Florida's Mike Lowell of extra bases in the ninth, making a diving stab and turning it into a double play. ... Yadier Molina, on the DL with a broken left hand since July 9, took some swings off a tee for the first time since being injured and said he's scheduled to try catching later this week. He could return within a week. ... RF Larry Walker (neck) will be eligible to come off the DL next Monday but hasn't resumed baseball activities after receiving a third cortisone shot for a herniated disk. Instead of letting him play two days after the shot, the Cardinals put him on the DL to allow the area to quiet down.
San Diego: OF/1B Ryan Klesko, who hasn't started at first base since July 22, 2004, will start taking grounders at first this week. The Padres believe a shift back to his favored position will also help Klesko's back and bat. Klesko's spot in left field could go to Xavier Nady or Dave Roberts, who has been starting in center. ... After a club-record 22-6 month of May, the Padres are 18-35 — the worst record in the majors since June 1.
San Francisco: CF Randy Winn, acquired from Seattle on Saturday, has ties to the Bay Area — high school in the East Bay and then Santa Clara University. He's expected to start in center field tonight. ... RH closer Armando Benitez, recovering from surgery to repair a torn hamstring, was scheduled to pitch one inning for Class A San Jose on a rehab assignment Monday.
Washington: C Brian Schneider was a late scratch from Sunday's game with tendonitis in his right shoulder. Schneider doesn't believe the injury is serious, but he might have a magnetic resonance imaging exam to see if there's significant damage. He's been a workhorse for the Nationals lately, starting 12 of their last 13 games. _________________ Looking for a free bet? Check out Guide 2 Freebets. |
