Just three years ago the California Golden Bears were considered perennial cellar dwellers in the PAC 10 Conference and then new coach Jeff Tedford strolled into town. The Bears are bowl now considered every year as having a legitimate shot at a big bowl game and now their arch-rival Stanford may be the next team to turn it around.
In walks head coach Walt Harris and suddenly optimism is in the air at this terrific institution and yes folks the football players actually take the classroom seriously here. Harris has certainly won his share of games in recent years. He led Pittsburgh to the Big East title in 2004 and a Fiesta Bowl berth against Utah -- the Panthers lost 35-7 -- before fully assuming his new duties of rebuilding Stanford as the replacement to Buddy Teevens, who was fired following three straight losing seasons.
It's also a clean slate for Harris, who left Pitt to return to familiar territory out West after the school didn't offer him a contract extension for more than the close to $600,000 he was earning.
Harris grew up in South San Francisco and attended college at Pacific in Stockton, though he would have loved to play for Stanford if his grades had been good enough. Leland also hired Harris to be head coach at Pacific in 1989.
Look for junior quarterback Trent Edwards to flourish in the wide open Harris offense and he has a great core of receivers and backs to work with.
Harris, who signed a five-year deal, has won at least eight games in each of the past three seasons, and he's anxious to get the Cardinal back on track. It's going to take work to regain the faith from impatient fans and alumni who are tired of a losing football team at a university that wins in almost everything else. He's rebuilt programs before and was the quarterbacks coach for Ohio State's high-powered offense in 1995-96.
Stanford was embarrassed 41-6 by archrival California in the Big Game on Nov. 20 for its fifth straight defeat, ending a season that began 4-2 with hopes of a bowl game.
The Cardinal went 4-7 last season, dropping five games by a total of 22 points, while Pittsburgh won five games in the fourth quarter or overtime. The coaching was absolutely horrendous last year and I look for Standford to surprise everyone and post a winning record.
With their entire offensive line intact and 10 of 11 starters back on offense, look for the Cardinal to upset Navy on the road the first game of the season! _________________ Looking for a free bet? Check out Guide 2 Freebets. |
