|
|
Last year Boston Red Sox fans finally had a chance to rejoice when the “curse of the Bambino” was expelled from the New England area, as the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in eighty six years.
With apologies to the millions of baseball fans across the world, no one takes their teams to heart like Chicago Cub’s fans and Boston Red Sox fans. The Cubbies unfortunately are mired in a losing streak that is approaching 100 years and who knows when they will win the crown.
As for the Red Sox fans however, this was total ecstasy and the Red Sox charitable foundation decided to do a fund raising raffle that would deliver the icing on the cake. Three fans would be rewarded a Boston Red Sox World Series ring, identical to what the players got, and as long as you purchased a $10.00 raffle ticket you had a shot.
The $10 raffle tickets raised nearly $2 million for the charitable Red Sox Foundation. "This was a way to share the victory with our fans," said Tom Werner, team co-owner and chairman.
"I was in complete disbelief," said Rick Ryan, a software company executive. "I had the same feeling I had when they beat the Yankees." Kristin Vona, a speech pathologist, saw a replay of Thursday night's drawing on TV and thought some numbers looked familiar. She ran to the kitchen to get the tickets.
"I was shaking. I had tears in my eyes," she told The Boston Sunday Globe.
Lawyer Mike Pandolfi bought 10 tickets, thinking he had donated $100 to a good cause. He learned he won when a Red Sox official contacted him on Friday.
The three lucky winners will be presented with their rings prior to the Red Sox game against their hated rivals the Yankees on Thursday.
Does it get any better then this? |
